Mobile App Manual Review under COPPA Rule: ‘Angry Birds POP Bubble Shooter'

Aug 17, 2023 1:45:00 PM

Welcome to Pixalate’s CTV & Mobile App Manual Reviews According to COPPA, a series containing the detailed factors the Trust & Safety Advisory Board educators used to assess an app’s child-directedness.

The educators manually review thousands of mobile apps available in the Google Play & Apple App Stores as well as connected TV (CTV) apps from the Roku Channel Store and Amazon Fire TV App Store using the COPPA Rule factors shown below & make those results available to the public at ratings.pixalate.com.

This post takes a look at a popular mobile app (1 million+ downloads) from the Google Play and Apple App Stores. Our reviewer discusses how the subjective factors set forth in the COPPA Rule apply to the app and factor into the reviewer's determination as to whether the app is child-directed or general audience (i.e., it is not targeting children).

The gameplay of Angry Birds POP Bubble Shooter is clear and simple to grasp. The visual content along with the animation has engaging and charming graphics. It has vivid colorful backgrounds and adorable sweet characters. The language in the “about this game,” has keywords such as matching and bubble pop which are child-oriented activities. Players have to pop matching color bubbles to free the young birds from the shrewd pigs with a slingshot. Players can even sign up with Facebook to challenge friends. The game highlights various levels as the player progresses they will experience different boosters and power-ups which can assist them with overcoming troublesome stages. It is free to play with optional in-app purchases available.

The objective is to rescue the hatchlings while bringing down the evil pigs.

The game is rated E for Everyone on google play and 4+ in the Apple store. There is an age gate but players are still able to play once age entered under 13. Review posted July of 2023 stated, “ I do enjoy playing AB POP with my granddaughter,” in the Google Play store, showing evidence of children using the app without the age specification.
