Mobile App Manual Review under COPPA Rule: ‘Doodle Jump'

Jun 21, 2023 2:00:00 PM

Welcome to Pixalate’s CTV & Mobile App Manual Reviews According to COPPA, a series containing the detailed factors the Trust & Safety Advisory Board educators used to assess an app’s child-directedness.

The educators manually review thousands of mobile apps available in the Google Play & Apple App Stores as well as connected TV (CTV) apps from the Roku Channel Store and Amazon Fire TV App Store using the COPPA Rule factors shown below & make those results available to the public at ratings.pixalate.com.

This post takes a look at a popular mobile app (1 million+ downloads) from the Google Play and Apple App Stores. Our reviewer discusses how the subjective factors set forth in the COPPA Rule apply to the app and factor into the reviewer's determination as to whether the app is child-directed or general audience (i.e., it is not targeting children).

The gameplay screenshots for Doodle Jump show that it is a simple, cute doodle graphic game. Players jump onto challenging arrangements of platforms. You slant the phone left and right as the doodle bounces accurately and precisely. En route, the player can run into monsters that can hop up and evade. This artistic hand-drawn doodle is extremely straightforward with the doodle jumping higher, collecting power-ups, and steering clear of hurdles along the way. They create dark openings that suck the player in and terminate you. Jump as high as you can to score more points, but if you miss a jump and fall to the bottom of the screen, the game is over. The language in the about this game section says, ”many fantastical worlds to play in ... .ninja, space, pirates.”

The game is rated E for Everyone in the Google play store and 4+ in the Apple Store. There is an age gate available. Once downloaded the game is readily available to play immediately after choosing by year of birth. A review posted in February of 2023 says, “I used to play this game as a child on my mom’s phone.” In October 2019, a reviewer posted, “I love this game. I have played it since I was a little child.” The reviewers did not specify their ages.
