Mobile App Manual Review under COPPA Rule: ‘Inside Out Thought Bubbles'

Aug 23, 2023 5:15:00 PM

Welcome to Pixalate’s CTV & Mobile App Manual Reviews According to COPPA, a series containing the detailed factors the Trust & Safety Advisory Board educators used to assess an app’s child-directedness.

The educators manually review thousands of mobile apps available in the Google Play & Apple App Stores as well as connected TV (CTV) apps from the Roku Channel Store and Amazon Fire TV App Store using the COPPA Rule factors shown below & make those results available to the public at ratings.pixalate.com.

This post takes a look at a popular mobile app (1 million+ downloads) from the Google Play and Apple App Stores. Our reviewer discusses how the subjective factors set forth in the COPPA Rule apply to the app and factor into the reviewer's determination as to whether the app is child-directed or general audience (i.e., it is not targeting children).

  • Crystal’s Take: Inside Out Thought Bubbles is an entertaining matching strategy game where players shoot colorful thought bubbles at a memory ball to make them disappear.

and and

The app  Inside Out Thought Bubbles is a fun Disney Pixar-themed game that combines matching colors with shooting bubbles. It is visually impressive with 3D bright graphics and easy control, where the main character is on a journey of emotions in which the player matches, sorts, and bursts memory bubbles.  It has engaging characters which makes the game fun for all. Overall it is a fun game to play for anyone who is a fan of bubble shooting games or fans of the movie.

The objective is to shoot and match memories to overcome hurdles like brain freeze and jump ahead using boosters.

The game is rated E for Everyone on google play and 4+ in the Apple store. There is an age gate but players are still able to play once age entered under 13. An apple store review with age specifications in January of 2022 states, “my 10 & 7 year olds both play this game & they love it as well.”
