Mobile App Manual Review under COPPA Rule: ‘LINE Bubble 2'

May 10, 2023 11:00:00 AM

Welcome to Pixalate’s CTV & Mobile App Manual Reviews According to COPPA, a series containing the detailed factors the Trust & Safety Advisory Board educators used to assess an app’s child-directedness.

The educators manually review thousands of mobile apps available in the Google Play & Apple App Stores as well as connected TV (CTV) apps from the Roku Channel Store and Amazon Fire TV App Store using the COPPA Rule factors shown below & make those results available to the public at ratings.pixalate.com.

This post takes a look at a popular mobile app (1 million+ downloads) from the Google Play and Apple App Stores. Our reviewer discusses how the subjective factors set forth in the COPPA Rule apply to the app and factor into the reviewer's determination as to whether the app is child-directed or general audience (i.e., it is not targeting children).

COPPA factors used to determine audience

and

The gameplay screenshots for LINE Bubble 2 include animated animal characters who have defined emotions with visually bright expressive graphics and illustrations. The game is an uninhibited color match game with a variety of bubbles to burst and many rewards as you play. It has beautiful graphics. In the beginning, it has a preview that tells a cute story of Brown the Bear on an adventure and goes missing so in order to find him, Cony goes off on a journey of adventures while coming across fun and interesting tasks. The game does download data between levels. This is an easy and fun game. Just throw the bubbles that match the colors in threes. It is entertaining and fun for all ages.

and

The sounds are that of the characters winning or losing with funny physical expressions. The app store description says, “toss bubbles around to solve the puzzles and save characters.” The language is directed at adults and children.

When players complete every level, they collect rewards such as equipment, coins, and fire. Players are given 5 lives, and when they complete a level, another life is added, or you finish all 5 lives and get one. If you want to compete you will see your ranking in the leaderboard. Collect rewards and beat others to find Brown the Bear.

This game is rated E for Everyone in the Google Play Store and 4+ in the Apple store. There is an age gate. Users under 13 can only play the demo.  Once the demo is done the player has the opportunity to put their age in again.
