Connected TV App Manual Review under COPPA Rule: 'Zo Zo Zombie'

Mar 8, 2023 1:30:00 PM

Welcome to Pixalate’s CTV & Mobile App Manual Reviews According to COPPA, a series containing the detailed factors the Trust & Safety Advisory Board educators used to assess an app’s child-directedness.

The educators manually review thousands of mobile apps available in the Google Play & Apple App Stores as well as connected TV (CTV) apps from the Roku Channel Store and Amazon Fire TV App Store using the COPPA Rule factors shown below & make those results available to the public at ratings.pixalate.com.

This post takes a look at a popular game from the Roku Channel Store. Our reviewer discusses how the subjective factors set forth in the COPPA Rule apply to the app and factor into the reviewer's determination as to whether the app is child-directed or general audience (i.e., it is not targeting children).

COPPA Audience - Child Directed

  • Developer: PlayWorks Digital LTD
  • Roku App ID: 631834

  • Crystal’s Take: A silly, physical humor animation with a cute zombie who uses his body as tools and gadgets to do good with his best human friend.  Visually it is similar to anime and child directed.

The screenshots for Zo Zo Zombie have animations that include young children, school, and interesting animated characters with fun adventures. The subject matter builds on the funny antics of the characters trying to help and ends up learning a lesson.

On the Roku App Store landing page for this app, the app description says, “Zo Zo Zombie trying his best to do good but always ends up in pieces.” In each episode, Isamu and Zo Zo Zombie are always determined to save the day through all their mistakes, from needing to mail a card to grandma to unintentionally starting an underwater war while fishing and helping build a new skate park. This description supports the idea that the target audience for this content is children.
