Connected TV App Manual Review under COPPA Rule: 'Rainbow Dash'

Mar 8, 2023 1:00:00 PM

Welcome to Pixalate’s CTV & Mobile App Manual Reviews According to COPPA, a series containing the detailed factors the Trust & Safety Advisory Board educators used to assess an app’s child-directedness.

The educators manually review thousands of mobile apps available in the Google Play & Apple App Stores as well as connected TV (CTV) apps from the Roku Channel Store and Amazon Fire TV App Store using the COPPA Rule factors shown below & make those results available to the public at ratings.pixalate.com.

This post takes a look at a popular game from the Amazon Fire TV and Roku Channel Stores. Our reviewer discusses how the subjective factors set forth in the COPPA Rule apply to the app and factor into the reviewer's determination as to whether the app is child-directed or general audience (i.e., it is not targeting children).

  • Crystal’s Take: Rainbow Dash is a Roku game that is an intense fun maze where you jump from pad to pad up to 10 levels.

The objective of Rainbow Dash is to turn a gray world into a bright and colorful one by consistently moving so that you don't get caught. The Rainbow Dash app is a colorful, bright, and fun game where the visual content appeals to children and adults.

On the Roku App Store landing page for this app, the app description says, “Bounce your way through this world of gray and leave a trail of colors as you exit the fray.” This description supports the idea that the target audience for this content is adults and children.
